The ibm pc
IBM released many types of the PC. Above is the standard IBM PC. Shown at the left, you will see an IBM PC AT. The AT stands for Advanced Technology. Notice how it is running Microsoft Windows 1.x or 2.x and how it has a mouse. The original could not do that!
Without the IBM PC, the world of computers would not be the same. The PC was the one of the first mass-produced computers, being announced in August 1981. Shortly after the release of the IBM PC, lots of PC clones started popping up, using the same processor (the Intel 8086) and many used the same operating system (Microsoft's MS-DOS). The computer giants Dell and Compaq started producing PC clones. In fact, the computer used to create this website is a Dell Dimension 9100, a computer that evolved out of PC clones. The IBM PC fell out of favor in the early 1990's. They were marketing their Personal System/2 (PS/2) running Microsoft Windows 3.1 or OS/2 then.
